Burning through the atmosphere, a small one-man craft hurls toward the planet below. With its heading not likening to a smooth landing, the silver space ship violently shakes its pilot to a near unconscious state. Streaking though the early morning sky, the shimmering space ship is camouflaged by the light of the rising sun. Disabled by an unexpected engine failure, the small craft shoves its way trough the tree tops, before being suddenly halting when confronted with a thick layer of green grass covering a soft layer of topsoil below. The crash caused a tremor that could be felt for nearly a kilometer, sending animals and birds fleeing, toppling and charring the trees that lay in its path. Between the crafts hard metal frame and the soft dirt of the local terrain, there’s little give. The ship digs its way six meters into the ground, while collapsing five meters of its front end. A few moments pass before the space explorer who piloted the vessel is conscious enough to move. From stillness to frantic in a flash the pilot desperately grasps at his harness to get free, then quickly turns his attention to his helmet and suite. Unsure of the planets air quality or how his physiology will react to the atmosphere, he slowly calms when the readout on his wrist indicates that his suite is intact. Once on his feet, he makes his way to a hatch at the rear of the craft where he gathers extra breathing cylinders and rations. Emerging from the heap that was his spaceship, the pilot looks out into the forest that surrounds him. Stumbling away from the fallen flying machine, the beleaguered space explorer takes a seat on near by rock and begins further assessment of his situation. He has enough air to last a few days and food that would last a few days longer.
Asleep in his home on a distant hill, a terrorized hunter leaps out of bed. Having been abruptly awakened by the thunderous rumble that shook the forest all about him like a planetary quake, the hunter rushes over to his window to find out what had happened. Having to shade his eyes from the light of the rising sun shining directly into his face, the hunter notices the morning light reflecting off of something hidden within the thicket of trees just beyond his woodland estate. Over come with curiosity, the hunter quickly gets dressed, grabs his gun, and rushes off into the woods below, in the direction of the object making the suspicious shine.
Once aware of his surroundings, the alien returns to, what remains of his ship, to see what he can salvage from the wreck. Discovering that much of his equipment remained intact he quickly eats a packet of rations, complicated by his fear of the local air quality he only opens his helmet long enough to shove the food into his mouth. Re-emerging from his ship carrying a large black box, a smaller device resting on top of it and a small satchel strapped over his shoulder, the space explorer looks for a good place to lay his equipment. Placing the boxes on the forest floor, he opens the satchel and removes a few tools, before beginning to setup a communication device with an emergency beacon. Almost immediately after he has it operational, a voice comes over the small speaker. The alien informs his comrades of his location and situation. The voice responds to the stranded pilot with instructions to begin gathering samples of indigenous life forms to be studied at a later time. Aware that there was intelligent life on the planet, they insist that he keep his presence unknown, not wanting him to alarm the beings living on the planet. They give the pilot a specific radius in which to conduct his trappings, and the time at which he would be picked up. With that, the box is silent, and the alien turns his attention to the smaller device, which he holds high above his head and activates; seconds later the device gives a readout indicating that the local air is breathable and perfectly safe. But the pilot remains dubious, fearing airborne contagions and local insects, he keeps his helmet and gloves on.
Entering the woods, the hunter begins to pick up the smell of burnt trees and leaves. Assuming that the smell is coming from whatever it was that shook him from of his slumber, and probably the same thing, that he saw shining in the distant woods, he carries on, unaware of what awaits him in the forest beyond. The hunter begins carefully making his way in the direction of the Smell. His gun in hand, held in a ready position, the hunter travels forth into the forest.
Using a portable tractor beam, the alien sets out to gather samples to be studied by his people’s scientist. Several hours having passed since the crash, the local forest dwellers have begun to return. Taking branches from trees, small plants, vines, grass, insects, birds, animals, and whatever else he happens to come across as he wanders though the woods, the pilot quickly amasses a decent collection of indigenous life. Spotting a large four-legged animal, the space explorer takes aim with his tractor beam. The light blue beam, paralyzes the beast, lifts it up and pulls it back toward the wrecked spaceship where it is placed in a small force field, prepared for transport off the planet.
Still moving toward the suspicious smell, the hunter sees the same four-legged animal, but is stunned when he sees the blue beam strike it and lift it away. He is even more amazed to see the unusual, creature in his bright yellow suite, holding the device, emitting the light blue beam. Watching in terror as the helpless animal is carried off against its will, the hunter is motionless. Numb with fear, as millions of thoughts, mostly horrific, run through his mind, as to the intent of the creature before him.
In a business-like manner, the alien continues to gather his samples when, in a glimpse, he notices the creature watching him from the distance. Pretending not to notice the hunter, who is stooping in the bushes, attempting to hide himself, the alien calmly, begins to move in the direction of the nervous man. So fearful of the alien’s approach, his shivers begin to shake the very bushes that are supposed to be concealing his position. The pilot slowly approaches the nervous hunter, not sure exactly what to do, the hunter continues to wait. But when the alien gets too close for comfort, the hunter leaps to his feet and sprints off in a mad dash for his house on the distant hill. Startled by the hunter’s sudden jump, the pilot halts his approach momentarily, before realizing that he can’t let the local escape. The chase is on, both creatures running as fast as they can through the dense forest. Looking back over his shoulder, the hunter decides that he can’t out run the mysterious creature pursuing him, so he stops. Turning to hide behind a tree, he peers around and takes aim. The skillful hunter fires shot after shot at the alien, who has himself taken refuge behind one of the forest’s large trees. The hunter continues to fire, again, and again until his weapon is empty. Struggling to reload, in his nervousness, he drops his ammunition. The alien, realizing that the hunter has stopped firing, decides he must be out of ammunition, and again, begins to move in to capture the now fumbling hunter. But just as he gets clear of the safety of the trees, the hunter has his gun loaded, raises it and fires three last shots. The first shot tears through the alien’s leg, knocking him to the ground. The next shot hits the tractor beam device, destroying it. The third and final shot is a direct hit to the head of the alien, shattering his helmet and killing him instantly. Confident that he had disposed of the only alien, the hunter returns to his home to contact the authorities.
As the noon sun beams down on the forest, a large transport arrives from the air, landing in a clearing behind the hunter’s house. Four men exit the craft greeting the proud hunter, anxious to investigate his report, they ask him to guide them to the remains of the alien. When they arrive, they find a mess of bright red blood and mush, being swarmed by insects. All that remained was half face, a torso, arms and one half of a leg that was once the alien. Moving on toward the crash site, the five men examine the wreck and discover the trapped animals and the black communication device. While taking a closer look at the device, one of the men is startled when a voice comes in from the small speaker. The voice calling, Lt. Wellington! Lt. Timothy Wellington! Do you read!? This is Cpt. Richard Davidson, of the U.S.S. Star Ship Obama! We have arrived to pick you up! Do you read? Lt. Wellington! Repeat. We have arrived to pick you up! Do you copy? Are you there Lt. Wellington!? Please respond!
